School News

The Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) has completed its post-secondary scholarship cycle for 2018, awarding 78 scholarships totaling $218,250. Cumulatively,

the Washington County Community Foundation has awarded more than $1,125,000 in post-secondary scholarships. The WCCF also awards scholarships to pre-kindergarten students and scholarships to Kindergarten through Grade 12 students attending non-public schools. Cumulatively, more than $2,200,000 has been awarded from all scholarship funds. To learn more about the WCCF’s scholarship opportunities, please visit www.wccf.net.

Listed below are the recipients for 2018, including the funds, awards, students names, high schools and their college plans for those residing in the South Hills – Mon Valley Messenger circulation area only.   For a complete list of all the 2018 recipients, please visit the WCCF website.


 

Chapman Family Scholarship Fund

  • Michael Tyhonas, California High School, $2,000 to study architectural drafting and design at Westmoreland County Community College.
  • Brooke Bioni, Canon-McMillan High School, $2,000 to study veterinarian technology at the Veterinarian Technical Institute.
  • Darianne Bane, Canon-McMillan High School, $2,000 to study hairdressing at Toni and Guy Cosmetology School.
  • Madison Franco, Bentworth High School, $4,000 to study industrial engineering at West Virginia University.

CHROME FCU/Ed Orisko Scholarship –

  • Elek Buday, California High School, $1,500 to study aerospace engineering at West Virginia University.
  • Benjamin Zeisloft, Peters Township High School, $1,500, will major in finance at the University of Pennsylvania.

 

Dave Pew Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • Mila Shadel, Peters Township High School, received $500 and will study music performance at Duquesne University.

Dr. Paul Pipik Fund for Study in the Health Sciences

  • Dominic Clutter, Bethlehem Center High School, received $850 and will study STEM at Youngstown State University.

 

John & Sophie Choratch Scholarship Fund

  • Madison Codeluppi, Charleroi High School, $2,500 to study accounting at Alderson Broaddus University.
  • Tyler Cochran, Canon-McMillan High School, $2,500 to study biology or history at Robert Morris University.
  • Christopher Kerr, Canon-McMillan High School, $2,500 to study forensic science at Garrett College.
  • Hannah Parnell, Ringgold High School, $2,500 to study criminology at California University of Pennsylvania.

Joseph P. Femiani Memorial Scholarship

  • Abigail Kita, Peters Township High School, received $1,000 and will study pre-pharmacy on the PharmD track at the University of Pittsburgh.

Kiwanis Club of Washington Scholarship Fund

  • Valerey Rosenwald, Canon-McMillan High School, received $1,000 and will study business office administration at Penn Commercial Business/Technical School.

 

Margaret Pitek Ciervo Scholarship Fund

  • Lilley Beadling, Bethlehem Center High School, received $500 and will study nursing at Pellissippi State Community College.

 

Olivia Scott Scholarship Fund

  • Jenna Vito, Bentworth High School, $1,000 to study chemical engineering at West Virginia University

Ralph W. Young Family Scholarship Fund

Nine awards of $10,000 were made from this fund. The recipients include:

  • Chase Conrad, Bethlehem Center, will study criminal justice at California University of Pennsylvania.
  • Paige Moore, Bethlehem Center, will attend California University of Pennsylvania to study physical therapy.
  • Travis Pettit, Bethlehem Center, will study hospitality management and Pennsylvania State University – Fayette.
  • Alexis Ozohonish, Bethlehem Center, will attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania to study nursing.
  • Marissa Filby, Charleroi High School, will attend Pennsylvania State University to study forensic biology.
  • Kaitlyn Riley, Charleroi High School, will attend Pennsylvania State University – Fayette to study nursing.
  • Autumn Carroll, Ringgold High School, will attend Slippery Rock University to study mathematics.
  • Lauren Gohacki, Ringgold High School, will attend the University of Pittsburgh – Johnstown to study business.
  • Nolan Sion, Ringgold High School, will attend the University of Pittsburgh - Greensburg to study criminal justice.

Ringgold Alumni Scholarship Fund

  • Anna Freeman, Ringgold High School, received $250 and will study nursing at Carlow University.

Ronald T. Miller, II Scholarship Fund

  • Raymundo Arvizu-Guzman, Peters Township High School, received $1,000 and will study engineering at Pennsylvania State University.

Sam & Bev Minor Fund

  • Carter Popelas, California High School, received $1,000 and will study engineering at West Virginia University.

Washington County Gay Straight Alliance Scholarship Fund –

  • Samantha Schafer, Canon-McMillan High School, $4,000 to study music education at Ohio State University.

Washington County Visiting Nurses’ Association Scholarship Fund

  • Matthias Campion, a Peters Township High School graduate who studies nursing at Cedarville University, received $1,250.
