Captain Eric McElvenny spoke on his time in Afghanistan, losing his leg, and what it takes to not give up

Guest speaker Eric McElvenny grew up in Belle Vernon, attended the US Naval Academy where he majored in mechanical engineering, and served in Afghanistan, building roads and helping people wherever he went until losing a leg to a mine.

After a long fight to good health again, he is now a runner and triathlon athlete. He encouraged others to follow their dreams and never give up on things important enough to pursue.

Guest speaker Lieutenant Commander Rick Elster spoke on America’s involvement in the Vietnam War.

Veterans from Blaine Hill VFW Post 7632 and American Legion Post 553 led the military ceremonies.

Patriotic selections were performed by the middle school 7th and 8th grade chorus, 7th and 8th grade symphonic band, and the 8th grade orchestra.

Following the program, guests gathered in the library for refreshments.
