Clairton Observes September 11th
In observance of 9/11, students and staff wore red, white and blue and took part in a back-to-school kickoff picnic hosted by Ms. Jackie Gaynor, her wonderful staff and Nutrition Inc. To celebrate the day and show support of our first responders, Ms. Jackie invited members of Clairton's Police Department to enjoy the picnic. Clairton Elementary made cards and posters to show the officers support. As a special gift to keep at the police station, Ms. Jackie also presented the officers with a huge basket filled with snacks, fruit, and other goodies. Clairton PD also brought book bags to be given to the students for Kindness Counts events.

Clairton High School Kicks Off School Year with Technology 1:1 Initiative
Clairton High School students in grades 9-12 received Google Chromebooks to use during the school day as well as at home to do homework and research. The Chromebooks are part of Clairton City School District’s 1:1 initiative focusing on innovation and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Throughout the year, students and teachers will utilize Google Classroom and other applications to collaborate online. Students will share information with teachers and peers and submit assignments electronically. All resources will be available for students at home. Middle/High School Principal Thomas McCloskey said, “the Chromebooks will allow teachers to differentiate instruction and will also assist in keeping students better engaged,” adding, “This 21st century technology is going to help all of our students succeed and be more career and college ready.”

GATE Program Offers Opportunities for Gifted Students
Students in Clairton's Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program are certainly not missing out of opportunities to advance in technology. Devayh Johnson and Mary K Janetka are using online tools to create digital storyboards. Creating visual illustrations before actually writing a story is a great way for students to organize their thoughts and ideas in a sequence or pattern. The images act as a blueprint and the writer can begin to feel that they are "engineering" their story, as opposed to "writing." These types of techniques tap into the wide world of STEM learning and allow for students' various learning styles to shine through.
Not only do the students in the GATE program get to participate in fun and exciting activities in the school, but they also have the opportunity to explore their interests and talents with peers from other schools. Eco-Challenge, Calcu-Solve, History Bowl and STEAM Playground are just a few of the events already planned this year for these enthusiastic learners. These events are a great way for students to collaborate with peers who are like minded and have an intense level of passion for learning.
