Calvary United Presbyterian Church in Donora is planning a special "Kirkin' o' The Tartans" worship service on April 28 to celebrate our Scottish heritage.

It will be a tribute to those resourceful Scots that had to endure the 1747-1782 Act of Proscription that banned highland garb, dancing, speaking in Gaelic, and playing of the bagpipes. When attending the Kirk (church) during that time, Scots would bring their plaid material under their coat and a secret blessing by the minister would be the signal for them to place their hand over their hidden treasure and ask God to give them strength and courage to endure the affront to their culture and customs.
The Kirkin' service is a Scottish-American tradition that originated in 1941 when the Reverend Peter Marshall was serving the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. It has evolved over the years and is now celebrated in many venues and countries of the world.

A processional "March to the Kirk" located at 800 Thompson Avenue will be led by bagpiper Dave Olson will start the service at 10:00 a.m. Included in the morning's activities will be a highland dancer, bagpipe solo, readings of Burns' poems and a blessing of the tartans of the 12 clans that are represented by members of our church. After the service, Scottish baked good will is served in our Fellowship Hall.
We are inviting any and all who are interest in Scottish history, customs, and culture to join us – Scots or not!
