New Eagle Borough Council held its monthly meeting Oct. 6th and discussed the borough’s plans to vacate three streets or portions of streets in the town.

The locations include a 20-foot section of an alley bisecting the property of Brian and Elaine Barkby, Fifth Avenue and a portion of Sixth Avenue, and an area between Fifth Avenue and the property of Brian and Elaine Barkby.

New Eagle resident John Slimick addressed Council during the public forum, expressing his concern about the pending abandonment of portions of Brook Alley. Slimick, who lives on Fifth Avenue, told Council that he is planning on building on a portion of his property in the future and that the abandonment of Fifth Avenue by the borough would cause him to be landlocked.

Slimick doesn’t have immediate plans to build but says that he has intentions to build in the near future.

New Eagle Solicitor Tim Berggren explained that speculation for building is not a valid or legal reason to avoid vacating a street. Berggren said that although Council is legally allowed to vacate the streets in question, Council has discretion to choose to vacate or not.

Slimick asked Council to come look at his property before voting on the vacating of the 20-foot portion of the alley in question.

In other business:
• Paving continues in the borough, weather permitting.
• Trick or Treat date has been set for Oct. 31st from 6-8 p.m.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Nov. 3rd at 7 p.m.
