During the June 19, 2013 Monessen City Council meeting Council and gathered residents said goodbye to Chief of Police Mark Gibson as he retired after 24 years with the department. He received a citation from the state for his years of exemplary service and after the presentation of the citation by Mayor Mary Jo Smith Mr. Gibson said, “It’s been an honor and a privilege working for this great city of Monessen. It’s been an honor serving the citizens of this city.”
John Mandarino will take up the helm as Chief of Police and was sworn into office during the meeting. Two new part-time police officers were also named, Nicholas P. Bielich and Jesse K. Newhouse.
Also retiring was Thomas McLaughlin of the Streets Department and Blaine R. Stinogle was hired in a part-time capacity to that department.
A motion was approved for the Monessen Community Development Corp. to hold a Halloween Parade on Thursday, October 24, 2013 and it was announced that the Giant Pumpkin Patch will shoot off fireworks and have other festivities at the 3rd annual Celebrate Americas Festival at the Herman Mihalich Memorial River Launch on Saturday, July 13, 2013.
