As a result of an April 8 public hearing where there were no objections, Peters Township Council approved the transfer of a state liquor license for a new restaurant at 4080 Washington Road.
Council unanimously approved the transfer from out of the township (Stockdale) to Fady Rama LLC, owners of Aladdin’s Eatery, which opened on April 1 at the site of the former Penny’s Diner.
The new restaurant will serve beer and wine, and an attorney for the owners said they expect liquor sales to account for only about five percent of total sales. The restaurant is one of six in the Pittsburgh area and specializes in Lebanese and American food.
In another matter relating to new restaurants, council scheduled a conditional use hearing for May 13 for Fiorentino Moscatiello, who owns Fiori’s Pizza and Italian Restaurant, which plans to open at 3801 Washington Road, the site of the former Parkvale Bank. The property is zoned C-4 Transitional Commercial, which allows for sit-down restaurants.
Another new business topic taken up by council was approval of the award of a paving contract to El Grande Industries for the township’s annual pavement maintenance project. El Grande’s low bid totaling $773,151 beat out those of six other bidders. Township streets on the list to get paving this summer include South Heidi Lane, Sherborne Drive, Woods Lane, Valley View Drive, Conestoga Drive, Evans Drive, Skyview Drive, Trotters Court, Brookdale Circle and Estates Drive. Also included on the list are portions of North Heidi Lane, Gateshead Drive, Fox Run Drive, Canterbury Lane, East Edgewood Drive, Old Washington Road and Galley Drive.
Township Engineer Mark Zemaitis said that he is pleased with the fact that the paving work will be well under the $1 million amount that was budgeted. He also said that additional streets might be paved, since the township received more liquid fuels money from the state than was anticipated.
In other business, Peters Township Council:
Approved the award of the sole bid to NES Rental for $16,537 to purchase an aerial platform to be used to change high light bulbs in township buildings. Maintenance and training on the use of the equipment are included in the bid.
Discussed several future transportation projects that will eligible for state traffic impact fees. There are a total of 12 traffic improvement projects that the township has identified for consideration. The two that Township Manager Michael Silvestri said might get priority consideration are widening of the intersection at Bebout Road and East McMurray Road to make turning easier as well as installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Thomas Road and East McMurray Road. There have been problems turning off and onto Thomas Road from East McMurray and vice versa. He said that a new light would be coordinated with the existing signal at Valley Brook Road.
Acknowledged receipt of a letter from Ruby Lidle of the state Public Utilities Commission stating that there is nothing her agency can do to compensate for damage sustained by the township as a result of an electrical surge several months ago. Apparently approximately $16,000 worth of damages to electronic equipment at the municipal building and the recreation center occurred as a result of the West Penn Power surge. Silvestri said that most of the damage, except $1,000 worth, was covered by insurance.
Expressed concern about a proposed Range Resources natural gas drilling site in North Strabane Township. The company has filed an application with the state but not with North Strabane Township.
The site is near Lindenwood Golf Course close to the border of Peters Township and within a mile of Peters Lake Park.
Learned of a proposed deep coal mine on the site of the former Mathies Mine in Nottingham Township, which will extend into Peters Township. Council Chairman Frank Arcuri said it is obvious that Peters would have no control over this venture, but he said that residents who would be affected should be notified about possibly purchasing mine subsidence insurance. Planning Director Ed Zuk said that the mine would be beneath the eastern part of Venetia Road and the Sienna Woods plan. Township staff is expected to write a letter to Nottingham Township about their concerns.
