It was the annual celebration of Student Government Day, a tradition Mayor Ellis says she hopes will continue far into Charleroi’s future.
On this day, Charleroi High School Seniors get paired with “real world” government workers and officials, from Magistrate to Coucilman, Commissioner Representative to Police Officer to see how it all works together to form a working Borough Government.
“I had an awesome time,” said senior Brandi Dubuvei, who went to Washington for the morning and shadowed Commissioner Harlan Shobert. “I learned a lot about Commissioner Shobert’s job and we also met a judge.
Senior Lainna Garrow also said she had a terrific time, “ I shadowed council President Mark Alterici - I learned all the issues council deals with including public complaints. They handle a lot,” she says.
Charleroi Borough Council and Mayor Ellis provided the students with a breakfast, a mentoring session, and a mock council meeting before the luncheon and program. Guest speakers at the program included Commissioner Diane Irey and Chief Commander of the American Legion Frank Pattera.
Irey spoke to the crowd on the importance of patriotism –“ A feeling of thankfulness for something that needs put into action,” and encouraged the students to become “patriots”.
Representative Pete Daley spoke briefly about his early years in government as Mayor of California. He encouraged the seniors to go into public office. “You can do it and it’s not too early to start. You are our next generation of leaders and we need you,” he said.
Senior Brenden DiPiazza and Logan Jacobs took on the jobs of councilmen for the day. “I’d most like to see more building demolished in Charleroi and newer ones built,” said Jacobs.
Senior Matt Carcella shadowed the police. “We went to a house where a guy was on drugs – it was pretty exciting.”
Chief Commander of the American Legion Post 22 Frank Pattera also addressed the crowd, paying respects to all those who have served our country and reminding the younger generation that people have died for the freedoms that they enjoy today. The luncheon was concluded with the students receiving certificates of recognition for their participation.
All in all, it was a day of people sharing and working together to help each other see what goes into building a community. For many of the students, the day was an eye-opener to work possibilities in the future.
For all, it was a day well spent with lots of camaraderie, learning, laughter and a good lunch. Food was provided by Salatino’s, Paulo’s, Armandos, Subway and Giant Eagle. Also present were D.A. Eugene Vittone, Ronald Luci, Chief of Staff to R. Daley and Dr. Brad Ferko, Superintendent.
