The workers are participants in the FITS – Furlough into Training Service, program which New Eagle has participated in for many years now and always with successful outcomes. New Eagle council approved the project for this summer. Workers and Borough crews are to work on the ballfield, soccerfield and especially to help clean up Memorial Street.
Also, at the April 2 council meeting, Mon Valley Chamber of Commerce representative Chris Grille asked that the borough along with Monongahela and Carroll Township send a member to the Community Uniting meeting to be held at Mon Valley Hospital later this month. New Eagle agreed to send someone.
Borough council authorized repairs to be made to plows on two of its trucks. The plows were damaged by the nearly five feet of snow that fell this year and one was broken in the March snowstorm. “Its been a tough year for our equipment,” said council president Jack Fine.
There was only one bidder, Hanson Aggregates of Connelsville, for the advertised asphalt project. The bid was approved at last year’s rates.
Council looked over a blueprint submitted for the subdivision of the old bank building from the house behind it and then approved it.
Police Chief Brian Tempest warned that starting in spring, traffic violations are to be more heavily enforced, particularly stop sign violations. 12 junk car notices were issued. The speed limit on Main Street through New Eagle will be increased from 25 to 35 m.p.h.
The 89 overdue garbage citations from last year are now paid in full. This number decreased from the 129 issued in 2011. Although council said they would like to see that number go down to zero, they said that a few hearings are not bad at all for 89 citations. Borough Administrator Linda Hall reported that many residents paid for 2013 garbage while paying their overdue 2012 bills.
The council continues to plan for spring and summer projects including the re-pavement of several streets.
