At the Monongahela Council Meeting on 2/13, Mayor Bob Kepics called the meeting to order, and led the Pledge Allegience as those in attendance stood. City Clerk Carole Foglia called roll call after prompted by the Mayor. She then read violations and calls.

In tax business, Council approved an ordinance authorizing a three-payment plan. Taxpayers will be required to make payments by April 1, May 30, and June 30, under the ordinance, amended by Tax Collector Ramona Mentzer.

Mentzer said, in a letter to Council, that a similar installment was put in place last year by the Ringgold School District. She said the school district received $20,000 extra in real estate taxes, crediting the installment plan for the boost in revenue.

Following was news of encouragement about a child who is making a difference. Mayor Kepics announced, “We have a special boy in our community. Instead of asking for toys, he established a fund. I congratulate Connor Vaccari.”

Connor, Ringgold Elementary School South first-grader, shook hands with Council members, the mayor and other city officials. Connor was present at the meeting as per the agreement that the fund be officially established with his donation there. The Community Disaster Fund will help families in immediate need after a disaster.

His mother,Donna, also with him, stated, “He decided to do this all his own. He will make his fund go toward the disaster relief fund. He’s collecting toys, clothes, blankets, all for the disaster fund.” Connor then received applause for his work.

Moving on to other business, the Mayor announced that the Monongahela River had been named “River of the Year.”

Council spoke highly of Senior Judge Paul Simmons. Then a written invitation from the United States District Court for the Western District of PA presenting the Annual Oral History Program featuring the judge was received. This was held on Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. The opportunity to RSVP followed.
