At least four additional properties in Nottingham Township will be surface-mined for coal by Amerikohl, Inc.
The company has been extracting coal from the Sanns property on Valley View Road for almost a year. The Nottingham Board of Supervisors discussed surface mining activity at their January 21 meeting with Amerikohl manager David Maxwell, who was accompanied by Charles Lightfoot of Earthtech, Inc. He is working with Amerikohl to prepare the next mining site in the township.
On January 7, the board was told of the company’s intent to conduct surface mining activities on the Guild property on Patterson Road, not far from where they are currently mining. Since that time, Earthtech sent the township a letter to give notice that the Pennsylvania DEP will be sent a surface mine permit application for the Guild property. Lightfoot asked the supervisors to review a general information form that Earthtech prepared for Amerikohl on the project. He said that since Patterson Road is a township road, they will need permission to install a stormwater system across it that will include 36-inch pipe.
After discussion of the matter with the board, a motion was made and approved that Solicitor James Liekar will prepare the language for an agreement to be sent to Amerikohl for their consideration.
Maxwell told the board that is almost halfway done with its mining activities on the Sanns property, which includes over 300 acres. He also mentioned that it is his company’s intention to add on an adjoining 5-acre property belonging to Dale Opeka for mining.
To give the supervisors a perspective of how long his company will be conducting operations in Nottingham Township, Maxwell said that they will be doing coal surface mining on two other properties after the Guild and Sanns properties are completed. After about four more years, he said his company will be done in Nottingham, because most of the coal that will remain is too deep for surface mining.
In other business, the Nottingham Board of Supervisors acknowledged receipt of correspondence from the Washington County Sewage Council to notify an application for a sewage disposal system for Mark Pool, Munntown Road and a repair permit for James Chappars, Munntown Road.
