Municipal News

By Christina Walko

While the majority of the first regular Charleroi Borough Council Meeting of the new year was spent in appointing new board members, first, the board heard a citizens concern from local business owner Rhonda Jaquay.

Jaquay expressed concerns with the upcoming games of chance regulations and the sidewalk display ordinance, which she had previously addressed with the Board. President Mark Alterici assured Jaquay that she and other business owners would have time to address their concerns before the ordinance goes through. “Everyone will have an opportunity to say, ‘This is what we agree with and this is what we don’t,’” stated Alterici.

Borough manager Donn Henderson has been attending all meeting of the Mon Valley initiative and Charleroi was thanked for its participation. “Most municipalites by the river have joined but we are still working on a more comprehensive membership - that’s important to the cooperatives success,” he added.
Mayor Nancy Ellis accepted a nomination by D.A.Eugene Vittone to serve on the Committee for Domestic Abuse. Ellis, Paul Pivovarnik, and Randy DiPiazza were also appointed to Council’s naming committee.

In other appointments:
- Mark Alterici was appointed to the Water Authority Board though December of 2017.
-Sylvia Whiten was appointed to the Board of Adjustment until 2014.
-Ken Sciafonic was appointed to the Board of Adjustment until 2016.
-John Mulinar was appointed to the Planning commission until 2015.
-Jody Cheplic was appointed to the Vacancy Board until 2014.
-Paul Pivovarnik and Jerry Jericho were appointed to the Regional Police Board for 2013.
-Terry Newstrom was reappointed to the Planning Commission until 2016.
Also approved was the request for Charleroi’s Little Great Race to be held on September 7, 2013.
