The city of Monessen held a swearing-in ceremony for city council members along with a reorganization meeting on January 2, 2018 at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 557 Donner Ave., and it was standing-room only.  Excitement was in the air for the new officials, even with the dangerously cold weather outdoors.

Mayor-elect Matthew Shorraw was first to take the Oath of Office, as 20th mayor, administered by Supreme Court Justice Debra McCloskey Todd. Those who also took the oath were as follows:  Councilman Elect Gilbert Coles, Councilman Elect Anthony Orzechowski, Treasurer Gerald Saksun, and Controller Wayne Vlasic. Outgoing Mayor Lou Mavrakis cordially shook hands with Shorraw, both democrats.

The event was hosted by Shorraw, who invited all attendees to dinner at By George Restaurant in Monessen afterwards.  He gave thanks to all for attending and for this opportunity.  The night was a proud moment for Shorraw, a 26-year-old, who learned much from his late grandmother, Irene (Sivak) Shorraw.  He noted, “I’m excited for Monessen. We all bring different talents to the table.”
