Ginger Hill Grange Hosts Celebration
By Paul Chasko

The first thing noticed at Clyde’s 90th birthday party is that he’s very comfortable in the Ginger Hill Grange. That’s most likely because he’s been a member for 40 years and has held various Grange offices.

The other things guests immediately noticed is that, at 90, he’s still very active and has made a great many friends.

Clyde’s volunteer work at the Grange keeps him pretty busy – even at 90 years of age. If you’ve been to one of the many spaghetti dinners at the Grange, you’ve most likely had a dinner arranged in part by Clyde. He’s is proud to note that over the years the Grange has made over $80,000 with their spaghetti dinners – all donated to area folks in need. Clyde also helped to build the Grange kitchen-on-wheels the public has seen at many area events, turning out funnel cakes for sale.

Except for a 27-month stint in the US Navy in the South Pacific, he’s spent his entire life in the Ginger Hill area, and as such, he’s associated with many historical area landmarks. If you’ve been to Mingo Creek County Park and have walked or driven across the Henry Covered Bridge, then you’ve crossed Mingo Creek on the bridge that was once part of the Henry family farm. The old stone farmhouse in the park is the house in which Clyde spent part of his childhood.

Additionally, Clyde has been acquainted with farming all his life. In addition to work on the family farm, he worked for 42+ years for John Deere, keeping the equipment used by other area farmers in good operating condition. Would you believe a local country musician has even written a song about Clyde’s abilities?

There was a cake after dinner, of course, and a lot of good-natured kidding about Clyde’s 90 years. Family members and friends spoke of their association with Clyde over the years - all great stories from great folks. Happy birthday, Clyde!
