Nurse caps are not very common these days, but one nurse who just celebrated 50 years of service at Monongahela Valley Hospital still wears hers every day for a reason close to her heart.

Inpatient Oncology Unit Nurse Susan Manges, known lovingly by patients as “the nurse with a cap,” came in during an afternoon off to celebrate 50 years of nursing this week with her co-workers and supervisors.
As one of six children and the first of her siblings to attend college, Mrs. Manges’ father saw her receive her nurse’s cap after six months of nursing school. He died suddenly at age 48 the same night she completed one year of school. Mrs. Manges said she’s worn the cap every day just for him.
“If I had to do all over again, I would 1,000 times do exactly what I did,” said Mrs. Manges, who has worked the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift since 1978, when Monongahela Valley Hospital opened its doors.
Before nursing school, she was a hospital “tray girl” and began working at the former Memorial Hospital of Monongahela in 1965, two days after graduating from nursing school.
On July 8, Mrs. Manges will celebrate 50 years of marriage to her husband Darwin. They live in Monongahela and have four grown children, Darwin Jr., Valerie, Steven and John, and five grandchildren.
