Austin joined the scouting movement in 2000 as a tiger cub to eventually become a Webelo Scout and earn the Arrow of Light award. Austin was received into Boy Scouts at a Crossover ceremony in March of 2005. During his scouting career Austin earned 49 Merit Badges, and with the addition of other scouting affiliates, Austin has spent over a year of his life in the woods.
For his eagle project Austin rebuilt an archery course at a local sportsman’s facility known as Mingo Rod and Gun Club. He collected $1,200 dollars from local business to purchase specialized hay archery backstops, and sought donations for building material. He organized, and with the help of family, friends, and fellow troop members carried out the construction of a total of 13 archery target boxes in addition to clearing brush from severely overgrown trails.
Austin is the son of Abigail and Robert Szuminsky of Finleyville. He graduated from Ringgold High School in June of 2012; he is now a student at Westminster College where he studies Molecular Biology. Austin would like to give a special thanks to the following businesses and individuals for their donations:
• Arlene Elosh-State Farm
• Pleasant Hills Chrysler Jeep and Dodge
• Skeets Automotive
• My Sisters’ Shop
• Jeff Valperga
• Mike Hanley
• Mark Lucci
• and Affordable Decks and Additions for donating all the lumber supplies for the project.
He would also like to thank all the members of Troop 1452, Mingo Rod and Gun Club, his friends, family and Dan Valperga, who without his project would have not been possible.
