Ian Marks and Jacan Cant have been best friends for 5 years and have often thought of sharing their birthday parties, as both boys were born in the month of April just days apart. This year they finally decided to do just that, and held a birthday bash at the Elizabeth Grand Theatre.

Jacan Cant (left) and Ian Marks (right) never imagined a turnout this big when they asked their party guests to bring donations for the White Oak Safe Haven Animal Shelter in lieu of birthday gifts!
However, unlike the typical birthday party for 10 year olds, Ian and Jacan asked their guests to abandon the concept of birthday gifts and instead bring donations to the No-Kill Shelter, White Oak Safe Haven.

The two fourth grade students, who attend Elizabeth Forward, sent invitations with a list of the shelter's needs, to their classmates. Jacan, son of Jeri and Jay Cant, was excited about the turnout from his friends and family.

"We didn't need all that junk anyway,” said Jacan. “The animals need it more, and hopefully next year we'll get twice as much."

One of the families (who chose to be anonymous) made special boxes for the birthday boys to take to the Animal Shelter. Even more donations arrived at the homes of the boys.
Ian, son of Patty and Sean Marks, said that they are looking forward to doing this every year! A guest at the party said it best when she wrapped up their generous and selfless act by saying, "So many kids today just want, want, want, but these kids are just so sweet!"
