Home & Garden

By Alice Harris

Bentworth Seed Lending Library held its first Heirloom Gardening seminar on Tuesday March 19 at 6 pm at the Bentleyville Public Library. Heirloom Gardening 101 was the first in the series of 6 classes devoted to growing heirloom gardens and rewards of doing so.

Instructors Kim San Gregorio of Hickory and Alice Harris of California/Coal Center instructed participants in growing heirlooms and in the use of the Seed Lending Library. Up to 10 packets of seeds are loaned at no charge on the promise the grower will return some of their seeds at harvest to replenish the Seed Library's inventory. All who attended Heirloom Gardening 101 had a great time, learned a lot, planted seeds, enjoyed yummy refreshments, and went home with some gardening goodies.

The second seminar in the series will be held on April 16 and focus on composting, companion planting, and getting ready to plant the garden. Cost is $5 per class. Registration can be made through the Bentleyville Public Library at 724-239-5122 or by stopping by. As class size is limited, please register early. Seeds are free of charge and available at the Library desk. Bentworth Seed Lending Library can also be followed on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bentworth-Seed-Lending-Library/1758275990977799?ref=hl and on Twitter @BentworthSeeds.
