Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs during August. Many of the events will be held in the hospital’s Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.
Stroke Support Group - Thursday, August 1 from 1 – 2:30 p.m., ECC. The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the daily challenges and struggles they face dealing with strokes and their after effects. Understanding Your Diabetes Medications - Thursday, August 1 from 6 – 8 p.m., ECC. Gain a better understanding of how your diabetes medications work and learn the effects diabetes medications have on your blood sugar readings. Completion of the three-day Diabetes Self Management Training is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Breast Cancer Support Group - Monday, August 5 from 2 - 4 p.m., Hospital 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all breast cancer patients and their families. The group meets the first Monday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1704.
Baby Care Class - Monday, August 5 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Parents-to-be will learn baby care basics at this instructional session. Topics include home safety, car seat safety, immunizations, breast and bottle feeding, pacifiers, bathing infants and additional topics. For more information, call 724-258-BABY (2229), ext. 25.
Managing Your Diabetes - Tuesday, August 6 – Thursday, August 8 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., ECC. This session builds on the education received in the “Managing Your Diabetes” program. Learn more about food choices, dining out, and how your eating habits affect your blood glucose control. Completion of the three-day “Diabetes Self Management Training” is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Bone Density Screening - Wednesday, August 7 from 1 - 3 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Do you have brittle bones? Have you ever had a bone density test? Innovations – Emergency Safety Tips for Children and Grandchildren - Wednesday, August 7 at 6 p.m., ECC. Perveen Punjani, M.D., will present a free program to discuss ways to prevent and manage emergency situations involving the children in your life. This program is part of MVH's Innovations in Medicine series featuring physician guest speakers providing medical information to the community. Dr. Punjani will repeat the talk on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at the HealthPLEX Willow Room. Refreshments will be served and parking is free. To register, call 724-258-1333.
Barbecue by The Rib Cage - Friday, August 9 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Hospital Central Plaza, outdoors. Come enjoy The Rib Cage’s ribs or a pulled pork sandwich. This event is open to the public and take out is available. Sponsored by the Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. Better Breathers Club - Tuesday, August 13 from 2 – 3 p.m., ECC. The Better Breathers Club is free and open to all adults and their friends, family or care-givers who want to learn or share information about living well with breathing issues. Prostate Cancer Support Group - Wednesday, August 14 at 6 p.m., ECC. All prostate cancer patients, families and care givers are invited to attend this free support group. For more information, call 724-292-9404.
Healthy Eating Supermarket Tours - Thursday, August 15 from3 - 5 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Learn how to choose foods at your local supermarket to manage a healthier lifestyle. The tours begin at Healthy Directions walk-in health care facility in the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Health Care professionals from Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology will conduct the tours and discuss “Back to School: Kids’ Lunches and Snacks.” The program is free, but space is limited. Bariatric Surgery Information Session - Wednesday, August 21 at 6 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Bariatric surgery is an option for people wanting to lose 100 pounds or more. MVH has teamed up with Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC to provide this free information session designed to give those individuals struggling with weight loss the facts to choose their best option. Breastfeeding Class - Monday, August 26 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This free class is designed for mothers who plan to breastfeed to help them feel more comfortable and confident while in the hospital after delivery and when returning home. Advanced Carbohydrate Counting - Wednesday, August 28 from 6 - 8 p.m., ECC. This is a diabetes self-management class that focuses on counting carbohydrate intake. Topics range from how to measure the upward drive each meal has on blood sugar to information on the glycemic index. Completion of the three-day “Diabetes Self-Management Training” is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Infant and Child CPR Class - Thursday, August 29 from 6 - 9 p.m., ECC. Be prepared to help a choking baby or small child. Sign up to learn emergency life saving techniques of clearing airway obstructions and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The $40 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling the Valley Health and Safety Training Center at 724-684-9536.
MVH and Red Cross Blood Drive - Friday, August 30 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., ECC. MVH, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, is sponsoring a blood drive to benefit the local community.
