Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs during April. Many of the events will be held in the hospital’s Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.
 
Breast Cancer Support Group - Monday, April 1 from 2 - 4 p.m., Hospital 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all breast cancer patients and their families. The group meets the first Monday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1704.
 
Baby Care Class - Monday, April 1 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Parents-to-be will learn baby care basics at this instructional session. Topics include home safety, car seat safety, immunizations, breast and bottle feeding, pacifiers, bathing infants and additional topics. For more information, call 724-258-BABY (2229), ext. 25.
 
Managing Your Diabetes - Tuesday, April 2 – Thursday, April 4 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., ECC. This three-day education series focuses on diabetes self-management and care. Bone Density Screening - Wednesday, April 3 from 1 - 3 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Do you have brittle bones? Have you ever had a bone density test? This free, painless screening will indicate if you need a more extensive test and if you have osteoporosis. No appointments necessary. For more information, call 724-348-6699.
 
Smoking Cessation Program - Wednesdays, April 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., Primary Care Resource Center (PCRC), Hospital, fourth floor. Classes are offered at no charge to PCRC patients, MVH employees and anyone with a referral from an MVH-affiliated primary care physician. For all others, the cost for the complete program is $20. Stroke Support Group - Thursday, April 4 from 1 – 2:30 p.m., ECC. The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the daily challenges and struggles they face dealing with stroke and its after effects. Auxiliary $5 Jewelry Sale - Friday, April 5 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., ECC. The Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. is sponsoring a $5 jewelry sale with a variety of costume jewelry available for purchase. Free parking provided with any purchase. RSDS Support Group - Tuesday, April 9 from 6 - 8 p.m., ECC. The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Support Group is free and open to all persons with RSDS or related illnesses. For more information, call 724-929-9492.
 
Advanced Carbohydrate Counting - Wednesday, April 10 from 6 – 8 p.m., ECC. This is a diabetes self-management class that focuses on counting carbohydrate intake. Topics range from how to measure the upward drive each meal has on blood sugar to information on the glycemic index. Completion of the three-day Diabetes Self-Management Training is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Healthy Eating Supermarket Tours - Thursday, April 11 from 3 - 5 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Learn how to choose foods at your local supermarket to manage a healthier lifestyle. The tours begin at Healthy Directions walk-in health care facility in the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Health Care professionals from Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology will conduct the tours and discuss “High Blood Pressure: Your Salt and Sodium Intake.” The program is free, but space is limited. Cancer Support Group - Monday, April 15 at 2 p.m., Hospital 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all cancer patients and their families. The group meets the third Monday of each month. For additional information, call 724-258-1704.
 
Bariatric Surgery Information Session - Monday, April 15 at 6 p.m., ECC. Bariatric surgery is an option for people wanting to lose 100 pounds or more. MVH has teamed up with Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC to provide this free information session designed to give those individuals struggling with weight loss the facts to choose their best option. To learn if you are a candidate for this surgery, join Ramesh Ramanathan M.D., FRCS, as he discusses this topic in detail. Enjoy a heart-healthy cooking demonstration prior to the discussion. Diabetes Support Group - Tuesday, April 16 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., Mon Valley YMCA. This support program is free for people with diabetes, their families and caregivers. The topic covered is, “Taking Care of your Feet” and includes foot screenings. Advanced registration is required by calling 724-258-1483.
 
National Healthcare Decisions Day - Tuesday, April 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Hospital lobby. All adults can benefit from thinking about what their health care choices would be if they are unable to speak for themselves. These decisions can be written down in an “advance directive” so that others know what they are. MVH Director of Patient Relations Renee Hurley, M.Ed., L.P.C., will be to provide information and assistance to the public on completing one’s advance directives: a medical power of attorney and/or a living will. Innovations in Hip Replacements - Wednesday, April 17 at 6 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX, Willow Room. Thomas F. Brockmeyer, M.D., Ph. D, will present a free program to discuss the Birmingham hip. This program is part of MVH's Innovations in Medicine series featuring physician guest speakers providing medical information to the community. Dr. Brockmeyer will repeat the talk at Monongahela Valley Hospital on Thursday, April 18, at 6 p.m. At both talks, refreshments will be served and parking is free. AARP 55 Alive Beginners Driving Course - Thursday, April 18 and Friday, April 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., ECC. The nation's first and largest classroom driver improvement course specially designed for motorists age 50 and older. It is intended to help improve skills while teaching accident and traffic violation avoidance. Some insurance companies offer discounts for course completion. All information is conveyed in a classroom setting in two half-day sessions. The cost is $12 per person for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Pre-registration is required, call 724-258-1234.

Breastfeeding Class - Monday, April 22 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This free class is designed for mothers who plan to breastfeed to help them feel more comfortable and confident while in the hospital after delivery and when returning home. Colorectal Educational Program - Wednesday, April 24 from 1 - 3 p.m., ECC. Monongahela Valley Hospital will offer a free colorectal cancer education and screening in honor of the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Control Month. Advance registration is required for the event. A distinguished panel of health care professionals that includes Andrew J. Zahalsky, M. D., director of Medical Oncology at MVH, will provide information during the education portion of the presentation and staff will explain the take home colorectal screening kit with instructions to test for blood in the stool. Infant and Child CPR class - Thursday, April 25 from 6 - 9 p.m., ECC. Be prepared to help a choking baby or small child. Sign up to learn emergency life saving techniques of clearing airway obstructions and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The $40 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling the Valley Health and Safety Training Center at 724-684-9536.
 
MVH and Red Cross Blood Drive - Friday, April 26 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., ECC. MVH, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, is sponsoring a blood drive to benefit the local community. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day - Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ECC circular driveway. MVH and the Carroll Township Police Department will work together on the 6th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a convenient and safe way for residents to remove unused drugs from their medicine cabinets. People can merely drive to the circular loop, drop off their medication and leave, no parking, no walking. Remove any personal information from the bottles or packages of expired, unwanted or unused controlled, non-controlled or over-the-counter medications. Donors remain anonymous and police will not request identification. Sharpies and syringes will not be accepted; liquid products and creams in their containers will be accepted.
 
 
 
Understanding Your Meal Plan - Tuesday, April 30 from 6 – 8 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Builds on the education received in the Managing Your Diabetes program. Learn more about food choices, dining out, and how your eating habits affect your blood glucose control. Completion of the three-day Diabetes Self Management Training is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class.
