Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs during February. Many of the events will be held in the hospital’s Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.
Reminder for Mamm & Glamm Event - Friday, February 1 – Thursday, February 28 – This is a reminder to ask your physician for your mammogram prescription to participate. On Saturday, March 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., HealthPLEX Imaging is making the process of getting a mammogram a little more comfortable at the Mon-Vale HealthPLEX at WillowPointe Plaza in Belle Vernon. The event offers women who have scripts for mammograms the opportunity to have their screenings in a relaxing atmosphere and then enjoy free pampering. MVH and Red Cross Blood Drive - Friday, February 1 - 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., ECC. MVH, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, is sponsoring a blood drive to benefit the local community. Breast Cancer Support Group - Monday, February 4 from 2 - 4 p.m., Hospital 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all breast cancer patients and their families. The group meets the first Monday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1704.
Baby Care Class - Monday, February 4 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Parents-to-be will learn baby care basics at this instructional session. Topics include home safety, car seat safety, immunizations, breast and bottle feeding, pacifiers, bathing infants and additional topics. For more information, call 724-258-BABY (2229), ext. 25.
Managing Your Diabetes - Tuesday, February 5 – Thursday, February 7 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., ECC. This three-day education series focuses on diabetes self-management and care. Bone Density Screening - Wednesday, February 6 from 1 - 3 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Do you have brittle bones? Have you ever had a bone density test? This free screening will indicate if you need a more extensive test and if you have osteoporosis. No appointments necessary. For more information, call 724-348-6699.
Healthy Eating Supermarket Tours - Wednesday, February 6 from 1 - 3 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Learn how to choose foods at your local supermarket to manage a healthier lifestyle. The tours begin at Healthy Directions walk-in health care facility in the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Health Care professionals from Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology will conduct the tours and discuss “Heart Healthy Eating.” The program is free, but space is limited. Stroke Support Group - Thursday, February 7 from 1 – 2:30 p.m., ECC. The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the challenges and struggles they face on a daily basis dealing with stroke and it’s after effects. Auxiliary Fudgie Wudgie Sale - Friday, February 8 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Hospital Lobby. Sponsored by the Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. Get your pick of the fudge and other chocolate goodies. Proceeds from the event will be used to enhance services for patients and visitors at Monongahela Valley Hospital. Cholesterol Screening - Monday, February 11 from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Do you know your cholesterol numbers? Get your complete cholesterol screening for $10 and add a blood sugar screening for just $2. Now is a great time to, “Start Your Heart” towards health and fitness. RSDS Support Group - Tuesday, February 12 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., ECC. The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Support Group is free and open to all persons with RSDS or related illnesses. For more information, call 724-929-9492.
Prostate Cancer Support Group - Wednesday, February 13 at 6 p.m., ECC. All prostate cancer patients, families and care givers are invited to attend this free support group. For more information, call 724-292-9404.
Advanced Carbohydrate Counting - Wednesday, February 13 from 6 - 8 p.m., ECC. This is a diabetes self-management class that focuses on counting carbohydrate intake. Topics range from how to measure the upward drive each meal has on blood sugar to information on the glycemic index. Completion of the three-day Diabetes Self-Management Training is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Cancer Support Group - Monday, February 18 at 2 p.m., Hospital 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all cancer patients and their families. The group meets the third Monday of each month. For additional information, call 724-258-1704.
Innovations in Sports Medicine - Monday, February 18 at 6 p.m., ECC. Jose Ramirez-Del Toro, M.D., will present a free program to discuss therapies and treatments of sports medicine. This program is part of MVH's Innovations in Medicine series featuring physician guest speakers providing medical information to the community. Dr. Ramirez-Del Toro will repeat the talk at the Mon-Vale HealthPLEX on Thursday, March 25 at 6 p.m. At both talks, refreshments will be served and parking is free. Breastfeeding Class - Monday, February 25 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This free class is designed for mothers who plan to breastfeed to help them feel more comfortable and confident while in the hospital after delivery and when returning home. Learn more about food choices, dining out, and how your eating habits affect your blood glucose control. Innovations in Ankle Arthritis and Surgery - Wednesday, February 27 at 6 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. William T. DeCarbo, D.P.M., will present a free program to discuss common causes and treatments of ankle arthritis. Understanding Your Blood Sugar Readings - Wednesday, February 27 from 6 – 8 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Learn how to make sense out of all those blood sugar readings you document. Understand how your diet, medications, illness, and stress affect your blood sugar. Completion of the three-day Diabetes Self Management Training is required prior to attending this class. Go Red Washington County - Thursday, February 28 from 4 – 8 p.m., ECC. Could your heart be healthier? Find out how at this free event, open to all members of the community. Discover the causes and treatments for heart disease and what you can do to prevent heart disease in your life. MVH will have multiple screenings throughout the evening and an educational panel discussion. Also highlighted is a healthy-food cooking demonstration – limited seating – with Pittsburgh Cookbook author Janet McKee, samples available afterwards. To round out the evening, join Jennifer Antkowiak for a heart health presentation including Zumba and walking fitness demonstrations or a stress management session by a certified stress management specialist. Infant and Child CPR Class - Thursday, February 28 at 6 p.m., ECC. Be prepared to help a choking baby or small child. Sign up to learn emergency life saving techniques of clearing airway obstructions and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The $40 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling the Valley Health and Safety Training Center at 724-684-9536.
Understanding Your Diabetes Medications - Thursday, February 28 from 6 – 8 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Gain a better understanding of how your diabetes medications work and learn the effects diabetes medications have on your blood sugar readings.
