During National Heart Month, the three hospitals in Washington County believe heart health is such an important issue that they have teamed up for a new county-wide education and awareness effort for women and men called “Go Red, Washington County.”
Canonsburg Hospital, Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) and Washington Health System will each host events at their respective facilities Thursday, February 28 from 4 - 8 p.m. Offerings include speakers, screenings, educational demonstrations, giveaways and more.
The hospitals are also encouraging men and women to don red clothing this month to bring more attention to the issue. To learn about the events at Canonsburg Hospital or Washington Health System, visit Go Red Washington County on Facebook.
At MVH’s Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center, registration and free screenings begin at 4 p.m., and KDKA TV’s Jennifer Antkowiak and Pittsburgh cookbook author Janet McKee will provide the star power for the evening.
At 4:15 p.m., guests can enjoy a free healthy cooking demonstration with author and board-certified Holistic Health Counselor Janet McKee, HHC, AADP, whose lively cooking demonstrations draw crowds wherever she goes.
In demand at corporate events for her whimsical teaching style and passion for her craft, Ms. McKee works with individuals as well as groups to teach how food and lifestyle choices affect one’s overall health and well- being. She will provide attendees with samples of her cooking afterwards.
Also at 4:15 p.m., MVH’s Stress Management Specialist Amaera Felder will conduct a session on relaxation techniques for all-ages and fitness levels.
At 5 p.m., Ms. Antkowiak will discuss heart health and conduct Zumba and walking demonstrations. For 18 years, she has been an award-winning television news anchor, reporter and talk show host; wrote two self-care books and is a licensed Zumba fitness instructor and a Leslie Sansone Walk at Home Walk Leader.
At 6 p.m., a panel discussion will convene on heart health issues and panelists include MVH Cardiologist Simon H. Chough, M.D.; Center for Fitness and Health Director Don Doyle; Cardiac Rehabilitation Supervisor Kenny Furlong, RN; and Senior Staff Physical Therapist and Director of the Dr. Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease Randall Komacko, MPT.
Screenings, information tables, raffles and sales of “Go Red Washington County” red gloves and headbands will continue until 8 p.m.
The event and parking at MVH are free, but reservations are requested by calling 724-258-1333.
Go Red Washington County will be held in conjunction with The American Heart Association’s “Go Red For Women” campaign that promotes heart health among women.
