Monongahela Valley Hospital’s entire Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Nursing Team, as well as Cheryl Panza, RN, CMSRN NCIS, and ICU Nurse Manager Tricia Golden, RN, were awarded the Clinical Improvement Through Evidence (CITE) Award for Measurable Outcomes.
The award recognized nurses for excellence in the use of clinical decision support solutions to drive improvements in patient care. The award was presented by Zynx Health™, a leader in experience- and evidence-based content, technology and services that drive improvements at the point of care for patients.
To achieve an aggressive goal of zero central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) in the MVH Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the team researched best practices and created evidence-based interventions and protocols to care for these patients. For example, nurses now bathe patients using chlorhexidine-based disinfectants on a daily basis and consolidate lab draws.
As a result, MVH not only achieved the goal of zero central-line associated bloodstream infections in the ICU, but has also sustained this outcome for more than two years.
“Again, our nursing staff members have shown that they go above and beyond to provide the best care for MVH patients,” said Senior Vice President of Nursing Mary Lou Murt. “We’re excited that they were formally recognized again for their efforts on behalf of our patients, who receive the true benefit of our team’s initiative and excellent work.”
