Unlike other activity centers, the Sew & Sew Activity Center located at 1719 Grand Boulevard in the Park Centre strip mall aside La Eda's restaurant in Monessen offers not just fabrics, notions, gifts, LED electronics, and glow materials, but exciting activities both for the young and old in an effort to have the ages mingle, transfer experiential knowledge, and encourage people to spend time learning new tricks of the special effect tech trade.
"Sew & Sew" Science Center encourages kids and adults alike to apply special effects technology to articles of clothing and offers other fun incentives. |
"Who says an old man or woman can't learn new tricks?" says, Lee Wainwright, co-owner and former science teacher who created special effect outfits worn by notable celebrities like Britney Spears, Jerry Seinfeld, Shaq, Missy Elliot, the Eurhythmics, and others. "We're trying to get kids' fingers off the game controllers and into creating cool stuff on-site...get their minds to think out of the X-box and create something new, fun, and exciting! Hopefully we may create some new young entrepreneurs!"
The LED, color changing inks, and fiber optic technology kits are found nowhere else in the world since they were created on-site by the owners, Miko and Lee, who personally teach everyone how to build them on the premises absolutely free. People are encouraged to bring their own apparel for adding effects or may purchase materials on premises. From color-changing tree ornaments to creating t-shirts and clothing that change colors in the sunlight, the center offers technologies found only at the Sew & Sew Activity Center. Children have a special treat as a reward for completing a project... the center allows them to watch a 3D movie in the mini-theater for no charge, just like the ones seen at 3D IMAX.
The first special effects class titled "Adding a Snowfall Effect to Fabrics" was conducted in November. Reservations are made via email: info@hleewainwright.com or phone: 610-463-8777. People are encouraged to stop in to sign up for personalized tutorial classes for adding special effects to their own clothing and items.
The center also offers its space and attractions for local events... birthday, private, or company get-togethers are encouraged. The facility encourages churches, sport groups, and clubs to schedule learning activity groups and Wii competition leagues using the large screen projection surround sound system in the mini-theater.
No charge is required for seniors who wish to watch movies) or just hang out for a free cup of hot chocolate or coffee and conversation!
