"We Can Do It! WWII” Traveling Exhibit

The Donora Historical Society and Donora Public Library, in partnership with the Senator John Heinz History Center of Pittsburgh, will once again be hosting a traveling exhibit – “We Can Do It! WWII.” Starting on Saturday, February 1, 2020 and running through Tuesday, April 7, 2020, the exhibit will be available to the general public, school groups, and social clubs. This 500-square-foot traveling exhibit started its journey in Pittsburgh during a preview at the Heinz History Center in April 2017, will travel throughout Western Pennsylvania, and will finish with us in April 2020.

While February 2020 is 2.5 years away, we are looking for your input and suggestions now!

If you have an interest in WWII history, enjoy public speaking and have a subject that you would like to present, or if you are a living history re-enactor and would like to discuss your uniform and weaponry as a presentation or for school students, please contact us. Please consult our “Civil War Exhibit 2015” tab on our website to get an idea of how we schedule our presentation lineup.

We expect to have an opening night reception with live 1940s era music. If you have other cultural or musical ideas for our exhibit or your organization, please contact us. This is a Donora community and Mid-Mon Valley exhibit and we look forward to sharing it with you all.

DONORA DRAGONS FOOTBALL – GAME FILM EVENT

Due to the excitement generated from our ongoing game film project, our first Game Film event to show and relive Donora Dragon football games from the 1960s with former coaches, players, cheerleaders, band members and fans – a “Return to Glory” is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, September 23, 2017 at the Croatian Club (Cro Club) in Donora, 329 Castner Avenue.

The games will be shown in the club hall with food and drinks available for purchase from the Cro Club. The event is free but donations will be gladly accepted. We encourage audience participation by sharing your stories or memorabilia as we show portions of various games. We also welcome your ideas or volunteer time before September to make the day extra special. Please RSVP for the Game Film Event, or with your ideas or interest in volunteering, by contacting the Donora Historical Society by phone or email.

Prior to the Game Film event, we encourage you to visit the Smog Museum at 595 McKean Avenue to see our rotating exhibit titled “History of Donora Dragon Football” that will feature photos, game balls and programs, lettermen’s jackets and leather helmets.

FALL CEMENT CITY HOME AND WALKING TOUR DATE SET

Our fall Cement City Home and Walking Tour is scheduled for Sunday, October 15 at 1 p.m. The Steelers play at 4:15 p.m. that day so the game should not conflict with your desire to see Thomas Edison’s solution for worker housing created a century ago in 1917. Please call or email to get your name added to a pre-RSVP signup list to be contacted when the tour date gets closer. If you have any questions about Cement City or one of our Home and Walking Tours, please consult our website and click the “Cement City” tab, or contact the historical society.
