Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center will be closed on Columbus Day, October 12, 2015, along with many of the Westmoreland District Libraries, for annual staff training. Please plan accordingly.

Fall Storytime has resumed! The program is designed for preschool children and consists of a story and craft each Monday night at 6 p.m. There will be no storytime on October 12, November 2, or December 7, 2015. The schedule of topics to be covered is:
• October 5: Explorers
• October 19: Dr. Seuss’s new book on pets
• October 26: Halloween
• November 9: Native Americans
• November 16: Picture books (November is “Picture Book Month”)
• November 23: Thanksgiving
• December 14: Christmas Around the World

A separate Daytime Storytime program is held at Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center on Wednesday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for children aged 3 to 7. Old favorites and new stories will be read to the children at each session. The children will be encouraged to explore the many books available in the Children’s Room for their enjoyment. Registration is not necessary. The weekly topics are not the same as the evening storytime.

Claire McMullen regrets she is unable to continue her “Beginning Genealogy” classes, due to ill health. She thanks everyone for their participation and interest. She hopes in the future to offer occasional special programs.

The Mon Valley Genealogy Forum will meet on Monday, October 19, 2015, at 5:30 p.m. The Forum is free and covers topics of current interest for genealogy. Light refreshments will be served.

An Adult Literacy Program is being planned for the Library. If interested in either being a tutor or participating as a pupil, stop by the Library and register for this free service. Tutors will receive training prior to the beginning of the program.

A new craft class, for young artists aged 6 and over, is meeting at the Library on Mondays, at 5 p.m. Crafts will be created for the Monessen Community Christmas Tree. For further information and to register, stop at the Circulation Desk.

“Teen Read Week” is being celebrated on October 18-24, 2015. It is a national literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association that is aimed at teens, their parents, librarians, educators, booksellers and other concerned adults. The continuing message of the Teen Read Week initiative is to encourage 12-18 year olds to "Read For The Fun Of It". Stop and see the cool new teen books that have been added to the collection.

“National Friends of Libraries Week” will be held on October 18-24, 2015 also. Please help recognize how much our Friends group does for the Library. Do you belong? Membership is $5 per year. Stop at the Circulation Desk and pick up a membership form today.
