Library News

Pleasant Hills Public Library is located at 302 Old Clairton Rd., Pittsburgh and can be reached at 412-655-2424. Listed below are their April programs:

Adult Programs

The Conversation Salon meets Friday, April 4 from 1 - 3 p.m. The group discusses a variety of topics from nostalgia to current events and welcomes all newcomers who have open minds and respect for opposing viewpoints. Refreshments served.

The Murder and Mayhem Mystery Book Club meets Monday, April 6 at 1 p.m. This month’s mystery selection is The Burnt District by Gary Link.

A film screening will show the critically acclaimed documentary film, ‘We Were Quiet Once’ on Wednesday, April 8 at 7 p.m. The story follows the residents of Somerset County as they attempt to memorialize the crash of Flight 93 after 9-11.

The Writers Group meets Tuesday, April 14 at 6:30 p.m. The group provides encouragement and critique for beginning and published authors in all genres. Bring a sample of you current writing to share with the group.

The Book Group will meet Monday April 20 at 7 p.m. to discuss House Girl by Tara Conklin.

The Library will be participating in the Spring Wise Walk Program beginning with a brief meeting on Wednesday, April 22 at 9 a.m. followed by a walk at South Park. The group will meet in the Children’s Playground parking lot on Corrigan Dr. at South Park at 9:30 a.m. for the remaining 9 weeks of the program. Registration requested.

The Library will sponsor an 8-week Tai Chi class beginning April 22 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. The class will be taught by Judy Crow and is suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners. The fee is $50 and payable at the first class. Registration requested.

Learn how to make a miniature fairy house from everyday craft and household items at the Fairy House Demonstration on Thursday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. The class will be led by professional artist and miniaturist Jim Allen. A sample fairy house is on display in the Library which will be raffled off during the class. Raffle tickets are available for sale in the Library. All class attendees will receive a free raffle ticket.

What’s Up in the Spring Garden on Saturday, April 26 from 3 - 5 p.m. will feature local gardeners providing timely tips and answering gardening questions. The program is sponsored by the Pleasant Hills Garden Club.

The Library is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2015 and to acknowledge this event it will feature programs that look back to the 1940s throughout the year. One of these programs is The History of Swing/Jitterbug on Thursday, April 30 at 7 p.m. The program is presented by Phil Yoho who will also give a dance demonstration with his wife, Pat.

Children, Teen, and Family Programs

 

Preschool Storytime: Tuesdays, January 6 – April 28 at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Explore different themes through stories, songs, crafts, and a snack. For children ages 3 1/2 to 6 years old, with or without a caregiver. No registration necessary.

Baby Book Nook: Wednesdays, January 7 – April 29 at 10:30 a.m. Nursery and action rhymes, songs, books, and so much more. For children ages birth to 2 years old, with a caregiver. No registration necessary.

Tot Time: Thursdays, January 8 – April 30 at 10:30 a.m. Learn and grow with stories, songs, finger plays, fun activities, and a snack. For children ages 2 to 3 1/2 years old, with a caregiver. No registration necessary.

Storytime with the Girl Scouts – Growing Things: Wednesday, April 1 at 7 p.m. Come to learn about all things that grow: plants, animals, and even you. PJ Family Story Time – Pajama Party: Monday, April 6 at 7 p.m. Join us for sleepy time stories, silly songs, fun games, a delightful craft, and enjoy a delicious snack. Taco Tuesdays: Middle School Book Discussion: Tuesday, April 21 at 6 p.m. Join Miss Terry for lively discussion and snacks. This month we will be discussing Time of Angels by Karen Hesse. Anime Club: Thursday, April 23 at 4 p.m. Do you enjoy anime and manga? Come talk with fellow fans, watch some anime, try some Japanese snacks, and learn about new and interesting titles. For teens in grades 6 – 12. No registration necessary.

American Girl Tea Party: Sunday, April 26 at 3 p.m. Children and grown-ups of all ages are invited to bring their favorite doll and learn about Molly and her life in the 1940s. Enjoy tea and snacks. Tail Wagging Tutors: Monday, April 27 at 7 p.m. Trained therapy dogs will be here hoping to hear a story or two. Practice your reading skills while enjoying the company of some furry friends. Spring Signing Story Hour: Tuesday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. Join the Early Intervention Program “Choices for Children” from the Western PA School for the Deaf for a special spring storytime conducted in sign language.
