Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs in December. Many of the events will be held in the hospital's Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.

Breast Cancer Support Group - Monday, December 1 from 2 – 4 p.m., Hospital, 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all breast cancer patients and their families. The group meets the first Monday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1704.

Baby Care Class - Monday, December 1 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Parents-to-be will learn baby care basics at this instructional session. Topics include home safety, car seat safety, immunizations, breast and bottle feeding, pacifiers, bathing and additional topics. For more information, call 724-258-BABY (2229) ext. 9.

Auxiliary – Moe's Dining Experience - Tuesday, December 2 and Wednesday, December 3 at Moe's Southwest Grill, Trinity Point, 118 Trinity Point Drive, Washington. Purchase a meal ticket for $8 at the MVH gift shop and redeem it at Moe's anytime on December 2 or 3. Tickets can only be used once. For more information, call 724-258-1167.

Innovations in Medicine – Shoulder Injury Repair - Monday, December 8 at 6 p.m., ECC. Richard Mitchell, M.D., orthopedic surgeon, will present a free program to discuss the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder injuries. This program is part of MVH's "Innovations in Medicine" talks featuring physician guest speakers providing medical information to the community. Light refreshments will be served and parking is free. RSDS Support Group - Tuesday, December 9 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., ECC. The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS) Support Group is free and open to all persons with RSDS or related illnesses. For more information, call 724-929-9492.

Managing Your Diabetes - Tuesday, December 9 – Thursday, December 11 from 6 – 9 p.m., ECC. This program is designed to provide tools for daily diabetes self-management. Those attending will learn how to monitor blood sugar, understand diabetes medications and insulin, manage low and high blood sugars, improve his or her lifestyle, better understand carbohydrates and plan meals. The program runs for three consecutive days with either morning or evening classes available each month. Advance registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the scheduled class. Free Alzheimer's Caregiver Workshops - Wednesday, December 10, two sessions — 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., ECC. This free caregiver workshop will discuss Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementias plus stress management techniques. Classes are led by trained professionals. Nurses and social workers will receive 2 CEUs for attending. Light refreshments will be served. Reservations are required. Call 724-258-1333.

Auxiliary $5 Jewelry Sale - Monday, December 15 and Tuesday, December 16 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., ECC. The Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. is sponsoring a $5 jewelry sale with a variety of costume jewelry available for purchase. Free parking provided with any purchase. Cancer Support Group - Monday, December 15 at 2 p.m., Hospital, 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all cancer patients and their families. The group meets the third Monday of each month. For additional information, call 724-258-1704.

Advanced Carbohydrate Counting - Wednesday, December 17 from 6 – 8 p.m., ECC. This session builds on the education received in the "Managing Your Diabetes" program. Learn more about food choices, dining out and how personal eating habits affect your blood glucose control. Completion of the three-day "Diabetes Self-Management Training" is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Stroke Support Group - Thursday, December 18 from 1 – 2:30 p.m., ECC. The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the daily challenges and struggles they face dealing with strokes and their after-effects. The group meets the last Thursday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1455.

Breastfeeding Class - Monday, December 29 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This free class is designed for mothers who plan to breastfeed to help them feel more comfortable and confident while feeding their newborns. Many props are used in this class including breast pumps.
