July Program at West Jefferson Historical Society

Long before television came into existence, radio was the main source of entertainment and information that families enjoyed in their homes. At the West Jefferson Hills Historical Society’s (WJHHS) July program, “The History of Radio in Pittsburgh” presented by Jim Haller, attendees will discover that Pittsburgh was in fact the birthplace of commercial radio. After KDKA made its first broadcast on November 2, 1920, interest in this new medium soared. Every evening family members sat around the radio to listen to their favorite serials, the popular music of the day, and the daily news.
WJHHS members and community members alike are invited to attend this fascinating free program on Wednesday, July 22, at 7:00PM in the Community Rooms of the Jefferson Hills Borough Building.
Born and raised on Pittsburgh's North Side, Jim Haller, has volunteered at the Senator John Heinz History Center for the past eighteen years. He was a United States Navy Veteran who served from 1965-1969, and for the past forty-one years, Mr. Haller has been a member of SABR, the Society of American Baseball Research. His love and knowledge of local history is sure to inspire an engaging program on the history of radio in Pittsburgh.
