Vinegar Was a Key to Preserving Early Foods

“A spoonful of honey will catch more flies than a gallon of vinegar,” is a one of Ben Franklin’s wise quotes. More appealing uses of vinegar to preserve and flavor food will be shown at the Greenock Log House in Elizabeth Township from 12:00 noon to 4:00PM on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Members of the Elizabeth Township Historical Society (ETHS) will discuss a few of the 18th century methods to preserve food which “Food Preppies” are taking a second and third look to practice. Tours of the house featuring two large fireplaces for cooking will be open for tours.

Greenock Log House Days

Homemade foods will definitely be the draw on Saturday, Sept. 27 when ETHS members will host Greenock Log House Days with baked goods plus booths filled with artists and crafters from 10:00AM to 5:00PM. Also, the Greenock U. M. Church will serve BBQ meals for the Apple Fest from 12:00 noon to 5:00PM next door.

Crafters, artists and vendors may reserve their outdoor spaces by calling Debbie Gilbert at 412-807-8452 or visiting the Greenock Log House Facebook page.

The log house built in 1790 is located at 1235 Greenock Buena Vista Road, McKeesport, (Elizabeth Township)Pa. 15135 Historical and education programs are featured there the fourth Saturday of each month.
